Mt. Washington Trip

This was a weekend trip on June 19/20, 1999 to the White Mountains in New Hampshire with Monica & Camille, the two most beautiful and charming gals from campus, Jim and myself. It's here where you find the highest elevation of New England, Mt. Washington with 6288 ft (1917 m).

Camille and Monica at a break on our way up there. It took us about 6 hours to reach the area.

Our gang on Mt. Cannon. This was kind of a warm-up hike on Saturday, before climbing Mt. Washington the next day. In the background you can see the highway rolling through the valley.

Jim, Camille, Monica and me on the summit.

What really gets you back on the ground - after the endorphins run through your body when reaching the summit - is the fact, that you can go all the way up the mountain with the car or a train. It wouldn't be America otherwise. ;)

We made it! Whoopee!

Unfortunately we don't have any pictures of the most hilarious situation of the weekend. But here's the story:

After we came down the mountain we went for an ice-cream and finally headed back home. We were driving for quite some time when I noticed a French radio station. All of us were awake, although we were dead tired and not paying enough attention to where we were, obviously as you'll see soon. After 1.5 hours of driving we come to a building looking like a toll station, which was surprising, since there was none coming up! :-) As we approach the place I read the sign "Customs / Duane" and burst into loud laughter and bang on the roof of the car. We were at the Canadian border! We drove in the wrong direction for 1.5 hours. I almost cried! This was unbelievable. It sounds unreal, I know. But none of us four had noticed it. Jim had a hard time finding anything funny about the situation, but I'm sure he'll be laughing about it now.
